The Importance of Taking Time Off

Personally, my biggest a-ha moments come when I least expect them. Logically, it makes sense that one’s best ideas would come when one’s mind is the most active. I’ve personally found that the opposite is true.

See, this week was unusually busy. I had to juggle a lot of different tasks, and meet some rather unreasonable deadlines that I’d set for myself. So, by Friday I was more tired than usual and ready to take a nice, long break. So, I decided that no matter what, I wouldn’t go near the computer for two days. This isn’t always an easy task for me - and admittedly I did slip up a few times - but for the most part I stayed true to my goal.

Saturday wasn’t an especially good day. I hadn’t finished everything that I’d hoped to the week before, so I was still very restless…and the very act of TRYING to relax made it even worse. But by about mid-day on Sunday, I started feeling like a totally different person. As my mind began to relax, my mood lifted as well. I began to take my time with things, move slower, and simply enjoy myself.

Then…strange things began to happen. I began to get some REALLY good insights into how to solve some of the business challenges I’d been facing. They were ideas that I’d been searching for all throughout my hectic week, without any luck.

Not surprisingly, it was only when I stopped thinking about the problems themselves that I began to get the answers I was looking for. Sometimes, it seems that the harder one tries to solve a problem, the more resistance they create within their own minds.

So, if you find that you’re working non-stop and can’t bring yourself to take some time away from the Internet, consider taking a break. You might find that your biggest business breakthroughs come when you’re doing nothing at all!

    Adam,

I agree with you. Taking time off from your PC can do wonders as you are relaxed and get great ideas and solutions to some of the difficult business problems. I have tested and it works!

When I write for my blog, I sometimes write on paper first and then on PC. I now realise that the output is definitely better when I write on the paper first as I am free from distractions of unknowingly doing multiple tasks when working on the PC.

After reading your tip, I definitely feel of taking some time off regularly from my computer everyday and thinking coolly on improving my business.

    Thanks for the tip!
